Nvidia’s getting a bit too rapid with its graphics driver updates these days. In fact, we’d quite like them to slow down. It’s only been a few a matter of days since the GeForce 416.81 driver and now the GeForce 416.94 WHQL GPU driver is ready and waiting for GeForce owners to download.

The GeForce 416.94 is the official launch driver for Battlefield V, including all the day one Game Ready optimisations and assorted guff. If you’re planning to play BF5, this is the driver you’ll be wanting to have.

It’s not all about DICE’s shooter though. A couple of other big titles have released this week and Nvidia has provided official graphics card driver support for the pair of them – Fallout 76 and Hitman 2. We’ve already benchmarked both of those games on Nvidia graphics cards so, er, hopefully not too much has changed.

As it’s only been a handful of days, any other changes are actually few and far between for the 416.94 graphics card driver. There are 3D Vision profiles for both Fallout 76 and Hitman 2 if you’re still clinging onto a 3D monitor, as well as a single solitary fix – the GeForce GTX 780 should no longer lag while engaging in any desktop activity.

The list of known issues is a little longer, so just have a quick glance down these before you hurry and download the Battlefield V recommended driver.

GeForce 416.87 WHQL GPU Driver Known Issues

[GeForce GTX 1080 Ti][Hitman 2][DirectX 11]: The game screen turns black after launching the game if Windows HDR is enabled. [GeForce GTX 1080Ti]: Random DPC watchdog violation error when using multiple GPUs on motherboards with PLX chips.[GeForce GTX 780]: Activity on the desktop lags. [SLI][HDR][Battlefield 1]: With HDR enabled, the display turns pink after changing the refresh rate from 144 Hz to 120 Hz using in-game settings. [Firefox]: Cursor shows brief corruption when hovering on certain links in Firefox. [G-Sync]: G-sync may not disengage after exiting games.

You know the drill by now – the GeForce 399.07 driver can be downloaded directly from Nvidia here, or simply auto-updated through your current GeForce Experience installation.

I’m saving £400 a month but my projected pension at 65 is still puny

I am a bank employee. I work in electrical engineering so don’t have any banking or pension knowledge. I have been contributing to the company pension scheme at my work.

In rough figures I basically put in £400 a month to my pension and after 10 years my pension pot has £40,000 in it.

If I retired at 65 my pension pot is expected to be £128,000. I would be entitled to a £32,000 lump sump and £2,340 per annum which equates to £195 a month at the end of the term when I retire.

Steve Webb: Find out how to ask the former Pensions Minister a question about your retirement savings in the box below

Although markets go up and down, the last 10 years has included some good periods for stock markets.

Charges do reduce the value of your pot, but a standard workplace pension with a household name firm should have relatively low charges. It would be worth asking your pension department for a more detailed explanation.

In terms of what you could get in retirement, a lot depends on whether the projection is based on the assumption that you contribute for another 20 years.

If so, you would have contributed another £4,800 per year or £96,000. Together with the £40,000 you already have plus two decades of investment growth, a final pot of £128,000 seems very low.

It might be worth clarifying with your pension provider the basis of their projection if it is not clear from the statement.

Obviously, if you have only paid in for 10 years and you’re expecting a pension to last you for 20 or more, then you can’t expect a fortune, but if you plan to pay in for 30 years in all, then you should certainly expect something better than this.

Assuming that the figure of £128,000 is correct, the lump sum figure is simply the standard 25 per cent that you can take tax-free.

However, the annual income figure looks very low to me. As a very rough rule of thumb, for someone at age 65, you should expect an income of roughly £1 per week for every £1,000 in your pension pot.

In your case, you would have £96,000 left after the tax-free lump sum, which would generate a weekly income of roughly £96 per week or £416 per month, which is much higher than the figure you have been given.

One possible explanation for the difference is that my rule of thumb is for what is called a ‘level annuity’ – this is a regular income which does not rise in line with inflation and does not pay out anything to a spouse if you were to die.

The lower figure you have been quoted may be for what is called an ‘index-linked’ annuity – one that rises each year in line with inflation.

Although the starting figure looks low, if you are retired for a couple of decades, that annual increase for inflation means that the true value of what you are getting is greater than it seems.

My key point would be that you are absolutely right to be asking searching questions about your pension. Make sure you understand how much your employer is contributing to your pension, as you would lose that contribution if you decided to opt out.

But by all means ask your workplace pensions department and your pension provider to give you answers about why your pot is not larger and why the retirement income figure you have been quoted looks so low.

House prices in major UK cities to slow in 2019 but London will fall

House prices have slowed across the majority of the UK’s biggest cities to rise at their lowest level in five years – and this trend is set to accelerate into 2019 as London property values fall.

This year, Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff and Newcastle are the only major cities to have seen prices grow faster than they did in 2017, while the other 16 have all seen slower growth, according to Hometrack.

House price inflation across the UK’s biggest cities was 2.6 per cent this year, down from 3 per cent in 2017, mostly because of falls in London and a sustained slowdown across cities in the South.

Annual price growth has eased to its lowest level since 2012

House prices in London are still 55 per cent higher than their 2007 peak, the figures show, hence Hometrack said recent house price falls are doing little to materially change the affordability picture.

However, Hometrack expects prices to grow by up to 5 per cent in the most affordable markets such as Liverpool and Glasgow.

At present, Edinburgh is currently the fastest growing city, with prices up 6.6 per cent, followed by Manchester and Birmingham also running at above 6 per cent.

However, only four cities are registering higher levels of house price growth than this time a year ago – Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff and Newcastle.

The cities that have the seen the greatest slowdown are all located in the south of England, such as Bournemouth, Portsmouth and Bristol.

Cambridge and Aberdeen were the only other two cities, aside from London, to see prices fall, down 1.1 per cent and 4.1 per cent respectively compared to November last year.

News – Xbox Store and PlayStation Store Black Friday Deals Go Live

Calling all console fans – the Black Friday deals are live on both the Xbox and the PlayStation stores.

Sony has gone in pretty big with its PSN Black Friday deals, knocking significant chunks off the asking price for Spider-Man, God of War, FIFA 19, Detroit: Become Human, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. A lot of these games are up to 50% off so they’re almost as cheap as just buying a physical copy. Hooray!

You can see the full list of PSN Black Friday deals here. The discounts all run through until midnight on November 26th.

The Xbox Store deals area actually fairly similar, albeit the deep discounts required an Xbox Live Gold subscription. There is 20% off on COD: Black Ops 4, as well as the same deals on FIFA 19, AC: Odyssey, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, as well as 50% off NBA 2K19. The lack of exclusives makes the Xbox deals somewhat less appealing, although Forza Horizon 4 can be had for 35% off, bringing it down to $39.

There’s also a miserly 10% off Red Dead Redemption 2 on both stores, which is OK I guess, but hardly tempting for anyone still sat on the fence.

The full list of Xbox Black Friday deals can be seen here. The Xbox sales also run through until November 26th.

Red Dead Online has got a little more meat on its bones with the arrival of the new Gun Rush update. Remember the rumours of a battle royale mode for Red Dead Redemption 2? Well, it’s here now.

Gun Rush is an all-new mode for Red Dead Online, sorry, Red Dead Online ‘Beta’ that has 32 players dropped into a shrinking circle, gathering weapons and ammunition as the player count whittles down. Rockstar has said Gun Rush can be played solo or in teams.

And that’s about it for this update, although Rockstar has outlined what’s coming in the near future. Other changes coming to Red Dead Redemption 2 Online include daily challenges, new Races, Showdown modes, new clothing and emotes. The Law and Bounty systems are also getting an upgrade in order to reduce griefing. Players will get a bounty on their heads for committing crimes and will need to pay them off or risk being hunted.

Rockstar says it’s going to make the Parley system easier to trigger. I’ve sunk 10 hours in and I don’t even know what the Parley system is so sure, make it easier. Apparently, this will help players avoid other aggressive players more quickly. Player blips are also being removed from the overworld map. Blips will only be visible while in close proximity, with Rockstar looking a system for griefing players to be visible from greater distances.

Looking even further afield, Rockstar plans to add new story missions to Red Dead Online, new Dynamic events, new competitive modes, new weapons and new clothing.

“Red Dead Online will stay in beta for a few more months yet as we have many more new gameplay features to add across the board as well as further changes to improve, stabilize and refine the overall experience,” says Rockstar.

Who knows, the god-awful online may even be good by the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2 arrives!

We’re beginning to march mighty close to Total War: Three Kingdoms’ release date and Creative Assembly has helped speed up the wait with a new in-engine look at the scenic lands we’ll soon be conquering in ancient China.

The Hero’s Journey trailer for Total War: Three Kingdoms introduces us to legendary hero Zhuge Liang, a military strategist wandering China in a hunt for a leader worthy to call his master.

Next week we’ll be getting some more goodies from Total War: Three Kingdoms thanks to some new gameplay at long last. Creative Assembly has promised they’ll be showcasing how spies work in Three Kingdoms. In Total War games, spies are powerful units capable of discovering hidden agents and armies, as well as assassinating designated targets or manipulating enemy characters to your side. They should be pretty handy for any would-be champion of the Three Kingdoms then.

Total War: Three Kingdoms comes to PC on March 7th.

It seems it’s quite trendy for hard-up shareholders to open up class action lawsuits against major publishers these days. Pomerantz Law Firm has announced it will be investigating claims on behalf of investors that Activision Blizzard, Inc has acted fraudulently following the departure of Bungie and the loss of the Destiny franchise.

The investigation from Pomerantz claims Activision and “certain of its officers and/or directors” were involved in unlawful business practices and took part in securities fraud.

“On January 11, 2019, the Company disclosed that it would be separating from its design and development partner Bungie, Inc. (“Bungie”) and that Bungie will assume full publishing rights and responsibilities for the Destiny franchise”, writes Pomerantz. “Bungie had developed the Destiny franchise with Activision as publisher. In the first five days of the Destiny franchise’s release, it sold $325M at retail. Following this announcement, Activision’s stock price fell sharply during intraday trading on January 11, 2019.”

I’m no stocks and shares guru but I have to say I come away from this a little bit confused.  Evidently the lawsuit believes investors should have been informed ahead of time. It’s pretty standard practice to not announce your business decisions to shareholders ahead of time else this opens the door to potential insider trading.

Second to this, the effect of Bungie and Destiny splitting from Activision would have been exactly the same, whether investors found out on Thursday or a week prior. The news would cause a steep drop in share value, there’s no other way around it. I’m sure our collective hearts bleed for them but there was some bad news, a drop in stock value, and that’s basically the end of it unless there are some seriously sneaky hijinks we don’t know about.

If you happen to have stocks in ACTI then you’ve probably not had a great time lately. Activision shares have taken a fairly calamitous fall from a peak of $83.39 on October 2nd 2018 down to $46.54. We can see three distinct dips as well.

In early October we have the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. While it launched fairly strongly the sales figures still disappointed investors. This preceded an even steeper dip on November 2nd when Diablo Immortal was announced. Finally, we have the beginning of a third sharp decline following Bungie’s announcement.

Outside of Blizzard, Activision isn’t a publisher loaded with big name IP. It has Call of Duty, sure, but losing Destiny practically halves its output in one fell swoop. That’s what happens when you focus on a single annualised franchise for a decade at the expense of building new IP.

Blizzard’s ever-so-slightly-worrying descent into mild chaos continues with the confirmation that Blizzard Entertainment co-founder and strategic advisor Mike Morhaime is leaving in April.

Morhaime is a man of legendary status for long-time Blizzard fans, helping to create Blizzard in 1991 as part of a three-man team that included Allen Adham and Frank Pearce. Morhaime has been Blizzard throughout its entire existence, overseeing the creation of Warcraft, helping to launch World of Warcraft, and generally steering the good ship Blizzard in the right direction.

Having originally stepped down as Blizzard president in October 2018, Morhaime became a strategic advisor in order to still have one hand on the rudder. Just a few months later he’s now confirmed he’ll be leaving Blizzard permanently though. J. Allen Brack is now the head honcho at Blizzard.

“As previously disclosed, on October 3, 2018 Michael Morhaime entered into an agreement with Activision Blizzard, Inc. (the ‘Company’) pursuant to which he would provide strategic advice to the Company in an advisory capacity,” Blizzard’s filing says. “Mr. Morhaime’s employment with the Company as a strategic advisor will conclude on April 7, 2019.”

In Activision-Blizzard related news, earlier today it emerged Destiny developer Bungie will be parting ways with Activision, and it’s taking the Destiny franchise with it.

As to the all-important question of where Morhaime will reprise his role as bassist in Elite Tauren Chieftain now he’s got all that free time…. we have our doubts.

Bethesda’s torrid time with Fallout 76 has, sadly for the publisher, continued into 2019. Fallout 76 players have discovered a hidden developer room within the game’s open-world and have begun rummaging through it to discover unreleased content and secret, potentially game-breaking weapons and items.

The developer room is included in Fallout 76 as a means for Bethesda to test out content in the live version of the game.  There are also dev rooms in Bethesda’s single-player games, accessible through console commands. However, it was never their intention for players to be able to access the secret lair in Fallout 76, an online-centric title.

Bethesda’s current solution to the problem is to automatically suspend the accounts of any players that manage to gain access to the F76 dev room, at least until Bethesda manages to find out how the heck players are doing it.

Slightly amusingly, users on Reddit are reporting that Bethesda is reaching out to players who have accessed the room in an effort to find out how they go in, warning the players they will “remain suspended and unavailable” until Bethesda receives an answer. Yes, Bethesda has actually decided to hold player accounts ransom over a bug in its own game. There has to be a better solution than delivering paid customers an ultimatum.

It’s all a little bit embarrassing really. Players have been rummaging through the room and discovering new Power Armor, unreleased weapons, every current entire in the entire game, and even Fallout 76’s only human NPC. Naturally, fans have been trying to get as much out of the room as possible before getting banned, including making alt accounts to raid the room and trade the items to their other accounts before they can get banned.

Well, I guess we can pile this up alongside the ticketing system exposing user details, nylon-bag-gate, and the frame rate being tied to physics as the list of embarrassing issues that have plagued Fallout 76 since its launch. At this point, we’re starting to even feel a little sorry for Bethesda, such is this catalog of errors.

DICE has locked down the dates for the first bombardment of post-launch content for Battlefield V, kicking off on Tuesday, December 4th with the arrival of the Panzerstorm map.

Like all post-launch maps, modes, weapons, and vehicles, Panzerstorm will be available free for all players. This tank-focused map is being touted as one of the largest Battlefield maps yet seen. It takes place in the Belgian countryside amid rolling hills and farms. Infantry will have to make use of barns and other outhouses for cover against the might of the tanks, but it certainly looks as if the armoured vehicles will have the upper hand.

The first gameplay has emerged from Panzerstorm, although it’s almost exclusively focused around capture point F, the Swine Farm. As you can see it’s perfectly possible for an infantry squad to hold a point against a tank onslaught, although building fortifications is going to be vital in order to minimise tank drivers’ lines of sight.

You’ll want to skip to 55m30s to view the gameplay.

Head to 1h0m and you can also see the first gameplay from Battlefield V’s Practice Range, an addition that’s also coming courtesy of the December 4th update. The Practice Range is an opportunity to go hands-on with weapons and vehicles, taking part in shooting range challenges, races, and other challenges designed to allow players to master the tools of BFV. Of particular interest is the ability to practice flying planes in the Practice Range. There aren’t many opportunities to do this in most Battlefield titles, aside from being repeatedly slaughtered in a real match, so it’s the sort of thing that could come in mighty handy.

Along with all of that, the final War Stories chapter, The Last Tiger, also drops on December 4th. This puts players in the boots of an actual German tank driver during the closing stages of WW2.

And finally, on December 6th, the first Tides of War chapter begins. Dubbed ‘Overture’, this adds a new progression tree to advance and will including special challenges and missions to unlock new items.

Quite a lot for Battlefield 5 players to get busy with over the coming weeks then. There’s probably an argument to be made that some of this should’ve been included in time for launch, but it’s only a few extra weeks to wait.

Have any of you given Battlefield V a shot? How are you finding it so far? Let us know!
